Faith Healing In The Christian Religion
Faith healing is a phrase that some Christians use who believes that God physically heals people through the power of the Holy Spirit. This involves "laying on hands" and intercessory prayer. Faith healing is often spoken of in other terms in the Christian world. The Catholic Church believes healing occurs because of intercessory prayer of a saint or a person that has the gift of healing. Physical healing has been credited to many saints of the Catholic Church. It is the most common reason for sainthood status to a spiritual person. The Catholic Church needs proof of one or two miracles for the person to be considered for sainthood.
Patients who have a life threatening disease that is untreatable by normal medical methods often seek faith healing. There are also groups that believe that all illness and disease can and should be healed by faith healing. They see it as the primary role for healing and often refuse conventional medical treatment. These are groups that believe seeking professional medical health is a sign of unbelief. Most Christians believe that spiritual healing goes with the modern medical practice of medicine. Most of these groups believe that God has given knowledge to humans to correct deficiencies and illness in the body.
Christian Scientists are often connected with the term faith healing. The news has focused on this group because a famous couple has promoted this religion during the birth of their child. They believe healing is a methodical process and does not rely strictly on faith. They argue you must have an intimate knowledge and understanding of the laws of God.
There are several men who claim to be faith healers. They use Christian methods and Shamanic tools that work for people of all backgrounds and spiritual beliefs. Richard Rossi, one of those faith healers insists all of his healings have medical confirmation.
Although faith healing has not been scientifically proved, there are many stories of people miraculously healed from incurable diseases, eyesight restored, and legs that walk again. Spiritual healing includes healing by prayer, "laying on of hands," and positive mental thoughts. Spiritual healing can include practices such as Reiki, Therapeutic Touch, Healing Touch and dozens of other related methods. The United Kingdom has National Federation of Spiritual Healers that practice faith healing, teach, and practice faith healing methods.
In our modern times there have been many faith healers who have been unmasked as frauds. Their apparent healing miracles were found to be elaborately staged stunts using planted in the audience.
Ethical problems for the medical profession occur when a patient refuses medical treatment for themselves or members of their family. There are legal issues involved, especially when a minor child is involved. Occasionally, legal authorities have taken over the control of children from parents to allow for medical treatment in life threatening situations. Some medical professionals believe that faith healing is nothing more than a placebo or a spontaneous remission by the body. Occasionally you will find a medical professional who has a strong belief in spiritual healing with modern medicine. |
